Name: Remus J. Lupin Occupation: Order Member, Clerk in a London Hardware Store, Werewolf Physical Description: Remus is average in height (about 5'10") and would have an average build were he not so gaunt. Remus also has to look of a man much older then he Remus actually is. His hair is prematurely gray and his voice is hoarse, almost wolf-like Personality: Remus is a very intelligent man. Unfortunately, he is also very cynical. Because he is a werewolf he has been shunted to the out skirts of society. He has few friends and most of his family avoids him. He is also a fairly cautious individual so many of his decisions come after much thought and consideration. To some, it appears he is slow to make up he's mind, though he rarely makes poor decisions. Despite his cautious nature, Remus does have an adventurous side, which is usually brought out around his friends James, Sirius and Lily. Remus is also very shy, because he always suspects that people will not like him. History: Remus was born to a pure blood wizard father and a muggle born witch mother and had an older brother. When Remus was a very small boy he was bitten by a werewolf, and there is no cure for werewolf bites. At age 11, he received his Hogwarts letter, but concerned about his condition, his parents told Dumbledore that he would not attend because he was a werewolf. Dumbledore, seeing Remus's potential, refused to accept the rejection, and discussed ways that Remus would be able to attend Hogwarts with Remus's parents. Dumbledore had a house built in the village of Hogsmead for Remus to stay while he was a werewolf and a tunnel dug on the grounds of Hogwarts so that Remus could be snuck to the house during the full moon. The Whomping Willow was planted at the entrance to the tunnel so that no one would stumble upon Remus when he was a full-fledged werewolf. Every month Remus was shunted away to the shack to transform by Madame Pomfrey, the Hogwarts nurse. Remus was sorted into Gryffindor house where he immediately became friends with James Potter, Sirius Black and the little Peter Pettigrew. His friends were always suspicious that he left every month so he started telling tales to them about where he was going. However, his friends were very smart and figured out that he always left on the full moon. It didn't take long before his friends figured out what they needed to do. James, Sirius, and Peter became Animagi and snuck off to the shack to spend time with Remus who could not hurt them while they were animals. Remus has never killed anyone, although he came close to killing Severus Snape as a result of a practical joke that Sirius decided to play on him. Even though he despised Snape, he became more cautious during his transformations after the near miss. Remus was made a prefect in his 5th year at Hogwarts, in hopes that he would be able to keep his friends inline, though he never exercised his power over them. He graduated Hogwarts as one of the top in the class. Because Remus is a werewolf he could never hold down a job in the wizarding world, so after spending several years moving from job to job he was no longer able to find any more positions as the word of his disease has spread through the wizarding community. Taking pity on him, Lily Evans Potter talked to her muggle parents who owned a hardware store in London. Lily's parents knew nothing of werewolves and very little about Voldemort, so they accepted her story about a friend who had a dying mother in London and needed a job to help pay rent. They understood from the get go that Remus would miss work once a month and may have to take other leaves short term as well to care for his mother. This story was, of course, not true as Remus's parents were killed by Voldemort about a year after he finished at Hogwarts. They had left Remus with some wizards gold, but unfortunately had left their home to his brother and his wife. The position at the hardware store was very forgiving of the time Remus had to spend away during his transformations and the time he spent on missions for the Order. It also positioned Remus in a prime location to here what muggles were saying about the frightening times. Lily also convinces James to allow Remus to stay in their attic during his transformations so that he will not be in London when he is dangerous.
